FAQs

Does Duke accept Veterans Administration and Department of Defense education benefits?

Yes, and the SVA can get you to the right place! The Office of the University Registrar certifies VA and DoD benefits and can be found here. Duke accepts Post-9/11 GI Bill, Yellow Ribbon Program, Tuition Top-up, Tuition Assistance, and Chapter 31 Vocational Readiness benefits.

Also, check out the Sanford Military Resources page for additional information, programs, and coursework.

Does Sanford provide additional financial aid opportunities?

Yes! All accepted MPP applicants who are not receiving full funding from outside sources are provided a merit-based scholarship. Additionally, MPP applicants pursuing security studies are eligible for The Carlucci Fellowship and the American Grand Strategy Fellowship. Finally, assistantships—most are in the form of teaching assistantships—are awarded to qualifying applicants.

Are GRE test scores required?

No. Beginning with the Fall 2021 application, GRE score submission will be optional. Students may, if they choose, submit GRE scores for consideration in the application process, but it is not required.

Can the program be completed in less than 2 years?

No. The MPP curriculum is a rigorous and sequenced program that requires fall matriculation, 2 years of study, and an internship in the summer between years of study. Many DoD broadening opportunity programs only permit 18 months of study, which does not fit this particular program.

What should be in my Statement of Purpose?

Describe why you are interested in a masters degree in public policy; how your military, academic, or personal experiences have contributed to your interest; and your professional goals upon graduation.  Stories and anecdotes are welcome, as well as anything that helps us to get to know you better.  Your statement should be no longer than 1,500 words.

What is the video essay and is it mandatory?

No, but the video essay is a highly recommended portion of the application. The video format provides Sanford a chance to see and hear your passion and interest in public policy, particular policy interests, and interpersonal communication. The SVA strongly recommends applicants to submit a video essay, as it is the most genuine reflection of you, the candidate. Contact an SVA Student Ambassador for more information.
